Update on the pontoon

The pontoon prepares to go into dry dock.

Last year, Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers announced it had bought a pontoon from Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, that will form the berth face for the KI Seaport planned for Smith Bay.

As you can see, the pontoon is large but low-profile (167m x 40m) with its own system of ballast tanks and engineering. It is now in dry dock at Dung Quat shipyard, Vietnam, where all internal and external surfaces are being sand-blasted, thickness-tested and repainted. Reconditioning is about 50 per cent complete. After that there will be modification of the stern, deck preparation, sidewall strengthening and the installation of “wharf furniture”, which is still at the design stage.  Pre-fabrication of retaining structures and linkspan bridge may also be completed at Dung Quat yard, before relocation to Australia.
