Proposed wharf receives major project status

The proposed deep-water wharf development at Smith Bay has received major project status.
Planning Minister John Rau announced this week that the proposal – from Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers – will be assessed under Section 46 of the Development Act 1993. This pathway provides for rigorous environmental assessment and extensive public consultation.
KIPT managing director John Sergeant welcomed the decision.
“This is an extremely significant project for Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers, for the Kangaroo Island community and for South Australia. We thank Minister Rau for endorsing our view that the major projects development assessment pathway is appropriate for the Smith Bay wharf project. However, we recognise that this is only the first stage in securing development consent and that the Minister’s declaration does not represent an endorsement of the project.”
